August was a very strange month this year. Early in the month, we saw geese starting to fly south, which is a good month to a month and a half earlier than normal. To add to the signs of impending early fall, the rose hips were out a solid month early, more geese headed south mid-month and people are scrambling to get the snowmobiles ready. There is also that crisp fall air greeting us in the morning, and some days it sticks around all day, and we nearly had frost a couple nights in a row, which is again a month earlier than normal. This spurred us into action making sure we have everything ready for the winter ahead. Hubby and I spend a weekend cooking a bunch of freezer meals, so we would have them on hand for when we didn’t feel like actually cooking during the cold months. We ended up making three veggie lasagna, three shepards pies, 2 batches of cabbage rolls and 1 batch of zucchini boats. This filled up a good portion of our small freezer nicely. I also went through all out home canned goods, making note of what we have left and what I need to can in the coming weeks.

The garden is well behind where it normally is, and that has me wondering if I will really get anything out of it. I did get some radishes mid-month, but only hubby eats those. It was nearly the end of the month before anything started to flower and even the carrot tops are much smaller than they should be. I’m hoping in the next week or so, everything explodes with life or we won’t get much before the frost kills it off.

I also did a very quick, but efficient four day long purge of the house. I think I was able to get the whole house done so quickly because I had done an initial purge of many things back at the beginning of the year. I was able to clear out lots of stuff, selling some, but mostly donating or trashing the rest. We now have tons of open space in the house, which ironically enough got semi-filled up during out winter stock up, but at least it’s neatly organized, and we know over the coming months that stuff will be used up.

On top of all the ready, cleaning and cooking I did over the course of the month, I also watched quite a bit of TV. I watched the sixth and seventh season of The Golden Girls. I really enjoyed watching this series again but I’m sad that it’s over with. I also watched all of InuYasha: The Final Act and I really enjoyed it, I’m also happy to finally have that entire series done after all these years. Clearing out some of my PVR was another big task this month and I did a pretty good job of it. On the PVR I watched nearly the entire season of Deadliest Catch and Yukon Men, the entire season of The Last Alaskans, and about ten episodes of River Monsters. I’ve still got some more stuff to clear off of it, but that put a major dent in it. We started doing Bad Movie Monday again part way through the month, and for this we watched the live action Beauty & The Beast and the 2016 Ghostbusters. For Family Movie Night we watched Sharknado 5, the 2010 Karate Kid, Kubo And The Two Strings and Jumanji. Other movies we watched over the course of the month were The Princess Bride, Moana and Thor: Tales of Asgard.

To say the month was busy was an understatement, but I feel good about it because I accomplished so much. How was your August?
