August 2018 goals – what I’m up to this month

August goals banner

August is here! Can you believe another month has come and gone? This year seems to be flying by. A new month means it is time to set some new goals. Back in June I started making monthly goals and continued to do so in July. I have really been enjoying this new trend in my life. Honestly, it gives me that extra push I need to get things done. So, I want to keep doing this every month. Before we go over my August 2018 goals, let’s take a moment and see how I did with July’s goals.

How I did in July

Overall, I did pretty well with my July goals. In some areas, I slacked a bit, but in others I did amazing.

  • Weeding the garden. Well, I sort of kept up with this one, but not as well as I should have.
  • Digging up the trees. We got this done at the end of the month!
  • Planning a planting bench. This one didn’t happen. But I can also do this later, planting season is done, after all, so no rush on this one.
  • Create a cleaning routine. Still working out the kinks with this, but it’s mostly done.
  • Read at least 4 books. Yes, I managed to read 8 books.
  • Exercise every day. So close! I did skip one day of my 30-day fitness challenge due to traveling, but I made up for it by doing an extra day.
  • Use my planner. I mostly stuck to this. My days go much better when I use it.
  • Spend time with family. I think I did pretty good with this one. We do enjoy spending time together. We even exercised together, which was awesome.
  • Watch 1 season of a show. This was a complete failure. I didn’t put in any TV time this month.
  • Blogging goals. For the most part, I did well with these. However, I did not get ahead with my posts.

August 2018 Goals

August is the last month of summer vacation for my son. It is also the month when the garden starts to produce, or at least it usually does. The weather has been a bit dry this summer, so I’m not sure if the harvest will start on time or not.

  • Weed the garden. I slacked on this a bit in July and now the weeds are massive. I really need to dedicate a couple of days to give it a thorough weeding and then stick to regularly weeding it again.
  • Plant grass seed. Since we managed to dig up the trees finally, it’s time to fill in where they were. I had originally planned to put a raised bed system there, however, I decided to simply plant grass seed. The trees were in the way when we shoveled snow during the winter, so a raised bed would create the same issues.
  • Dig up plants. There are a few plants in the garden that are on their last legs. I have tried to keep them alive, however, it’s clear that I have lost the battle. So it’s time to dig them up to prevent any diseases they may have from spreading.

  • Continue exercising. The 30-day fitness challenge may be over, but that doesn’t mean I am going to stop exercising.
  • Read at least four books. Unlike in July, I am going to break this goal down a bit. I want to finish reading 1 partially read book, and read one full-length novel. The remaining books can be whatever I choose.
  • Finalize the cleaning routine. I’d like to put the finishing touches on this so that I can not only stick with it in the future but share it as well.
  • Watch 1 season of a series. I’m going to attempt to do this again this month. I really have so many shows that I have been meaning to watch that I just need to start already.
  • Start bullet journaling again. I used to use my bullet journal pretty regularly, but then I stopped. I would like to start using it again as a way to keep track of non-blog-related things.
  • Use my planner more. I have decided that my planner will focus on blog-related items. I may put a few life items in there, but I want to keep it focused on one thing.
  • Try a new recipe. There are so many amazing-looking recipes out there and I really want to expand my cooking knowledge. So this month, I would like to try at least one new recipe.
  • Set aside gaming time. I know this sounds like a silly goal. However, I love playing video games, especially World of Warcraft and with the newest expansion coming out in a couple of weeks I need to allow time for playing.
  • Start planning for NaNoWriMo. I know it’s only August, but National Novel Writing Month will be here before we know it. I have participated in NaNoWriMo since 2011 and I want to be ready for it this year. This way I won’t be panicking the night before it starts.
  • Seal the deck. Our deck is finally done and that means it’s time to seal it. I want to get this done while temperatures are still warm enough to properly apply the sealant.

  • Get ahead on posts. If I keep putting this goal up each month, it’s bound to happen eventually. Perhaps August will be the month that I finally get ahead.
  • Do some background work. There are a few things I want to update and add to the blog this month. Nothing major, but little things that I have been putting off.
  • Take lots of photos. I am usually scrambling to get photos for blog posts and Instagram the day I need them. I want to get as many of these taken ahead of time as possible.

I hope you enjoyed my August 2018 goals. Have you made goals for this month?

  1. You are organized, publishing this on the morning of August 1! I love this idea of writing out goals each month. I usually make a daily to-do-list that helps me get stuff done, but the bigger projects around the house sometimes fall off the rails due to weather etc. and then get forgotten until later. It’s also nice that it’s not just chores but things for you, reading, exercise – things that so many of us put last. How do you participate in National Novel Writing Month? That sounds interesting!

    1. I wish I could say I planned it that way, but this was supposed to be yesterdays post, however, due to computer issues it was pushed back to today. Worked out for the best though. I also do daily to-do lists, though not every day, and it does really help to knock out the small stuff. However, I agree that doing that made me often ignore or forget about the bigger projects. So I have found these monthly goals really help to knock those out or at least work towards them.
To participate in NaNoWriMo, you simply sign up at the website and then starting November 1st, you start writing and the goal is to write 50,000 words in 30 days. It’s a pretty fun challenge and I always look forward to it.

  2. These are great goals! Mine is definitely to get back to exercising, and I really need to work ahead on the blog as well. I hadn’t even thought about planning ahead for NaNoWriMo – I always seem to miss it. Maybe this year!

    1. Good luck getting back into exercising. Getting ahead on the blog seems like one of those impossible to reach goals, but if I keep trying to do it then eventually it will happen. I usually plan for NaNoWriMo the month before, but I figure it can’t hurt to start a bit earlier. Definitely try to join in!

  3. Wow that is such a long list, you have a busy month ahead. I love trying new recipes we try and do one a week and if it’s good it gets added to the recipe tin so we can do it again!

    1. It will certainly keep me busy. I used to try a new recipe once a week but got out of the habit a while ago. Would love to start doing it again. I already have a couple recipes lined up that I want to try.

  4. Seriously, it’s only August 1 and you have written out your goals. Impressed! I haven’t gotten that far yet!

    1. I feel like it was purely a fluke that I got my goals written out and posted on the first. Normally it’s a week into a month before I start thinking about them.

  5. I haven’t even thought about my August goals yet!! Eeek! Well done you for having so many specific goals. I have never heard of the national novel writing month but that sounds great!! Have you written a full on novel each year?? That’s awesome!

    1. No worries, there is still plenty of time left in the month to figure out your goals! I have never completely written a full novel during NaNoWriMo, although I do tend to work on new novel ideas each year. I am considering using this year to actually fully finish a rough draft of one of my existing novels instead of adding another partially written one to the pile.

    1. That’s the plan! If I keep busy, then I shouldn’t be too bored throughout the month. Plus now is the time to get stuff done as winter will be here before I’m ready.

  6. Congrats on July! I think you did amazing with keeping up with your fitness plan and it seems like you met a lot of your other goals too! I am sure August will also be a great month for you!

    1. Thanks. I am definitely happy with how much I got done last month and looking forward to trying to knock out all of my goals this month.

  7. Good luck getting organized and exercising. Thanks, getting and keeping fit is definitely going to be a long-term goal.

  8. Thanks. I think keeping them organized and broken into categories is what keeps me on track when I have so many of them. Good luck with your fitness goals!

  9. Thank you! I do feel that spreading my goals out across various areas of my life is what helps me to keep motivated and prevents things from getting neglected. The digital world is only a small aspect of my life, so I need to include everything if I am truly going to make and keep goals.

  10. Thanks. I’m sure you will have no trouble figuring out your goals and achieving them. Mine were all scattered about for the longest time, but taking a bit of time, writing them down and breaking them into categories has really helped me a lot. Good luck with your goals!

  11. You basically smashed your July goals and I’m sure you’ll do really well with the August ones too. I think my own goals are quite similar….exercising, reading, blogging, watching new TV shows and some gardening and housework stuff. I also plan to get outdoors as much as possible before the summer is over! Thanks for sharing 🙂 x

    1. I honestly didn’t think I would hit as many of my July goals as I did. But I managed to pull a lot of it off in the last week of the month. Yes, I also want to spend lots of time outside enjoying the last of summer. Summer is all too short, so need to enjoy it and make the most of it.

  12. I really need to get back to being this organised, great post for motivation x

    1. Good luck getting back into organizing!
