Baking bread is one of my favorite things to do in the kitchen. Watching the dough rise and getting to enjoy that yeast smell as it bakes brings me all kinds of joy. Of course, making bread is also a great way to relieve stress. Kneading the dough can really help ease any tension you are feeling. These easy yeast dinner rolls are a favorite dinner-time addition in our house. They bake up quickly and are incredibly soft.
Easy yeast dinner rolls
Of course, you can eat these buns as part of your breakfast or a random snack. I won’t judge you. I do exactly that. As long as there are some freshly baked buns in my house, I absolutely feel drawn to them and will eat them at every opportunity.
- 1 cup warm water
- 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 3 Tbsp softened butter
- 1 egg, beaten
- 3 1/2 cups flour
- 1 cup mozzarella cheese
- 1/4-1/3 cup of pizza sauce
- Place the first 6 ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Mix until well combined. Use speed 2 on the stand mixer or mix by hand.
- Add 3 1/2 cups of flour and mix until well combined, using speed 2 on your stand mixer. If the dough is too sticky, add a small amount of flour.
- Place the dough onto a floured surface and knead a few times until it becomes smooth.
- Grease a bowl and place the dough inside. Cover with a towel or plastic wrap and let rise for approximately 45 minutes. Placing it in the oven with the light on works well if it happens to be cool in your house.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Punch down and place on a floured surface. Divide the dough into 12 equal parts and shape into buns.
- Place buns into a greased 9 x 13 baking dish. Let rise for about 30 minutes.
- Bake at 350 for about 20 minutes. Once out of the oven, brush the tops of the buns with melted butter.
You can even upgrade these buns by adding herbs and cheese to them. When doing this, add 1-2 Tablespoons of each of desired herbs, I use oregano, parsley, basil, and garlic powder. I find that parmesan cheese works best, however, you can use any cheese you wish. I find it is best to remove some flour when using cheese. For example, I add about 1/2 of parmesan cheese, thus I reduce the amount of flour used by 1/2 a cup.
This recipe is pretty versatile. I have used it to make hamburger buns by simply making larger flatter buns. It can also be used to make pizza breadsticks.
