Homemade cheese crackers, a perfect snack

Crackers are a favorite snack for my family. Much like with muffins, there are so many different flavors of cracker out there, that it’s hard to choose, let alone get tired of eating them. However, among all of those crackers, cheese crackers are our ultimate favorite. However, there came a point where I wanted to try to make crackers from scratch. After searching through multiple recipes online, I stumbled upon one for cheese crackers. After making it a few times, I modified this recipe to what works best for my family. These homemade cheese crackers are packed with flavor and provide a lot of snacking potential.

Homemade cheese crackers

  • 8 ounces shredded cheddar cheese, about 2 cups
  • 4 Tablespoons butter, cut into small cubes
  • 1 cup flour
  • 2-3 Tablespoons Cold Water
  • ¾ teaspoons Salt (optional)

  1. Place cheese, flour, and butter in a food processor and pulse until the dough resembles coarse sand.
  2. Add the water, 1 Tablespoon at a time, and pulse until combined. Once the dough comes together in a ball it is ready.
  3. Remove the dough and wrap it in plastic. Place in the refrigerator and chill for about 20 minutes.
  4. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  5. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/8 inch thick. These crackers will puff up quite a bit while baking.
  6. Using a cookie cutter or a pizza cutter, cut the dough into shapes. The number of crackers you get will be determined by how large you make the crackers. On average, I get at least 10 dozen crackers by making them in about 1-inch squares. Place on a lined cookie sheet.
  7. Bake for about 15 minutes or until crispy.

These crackers can also be made pizza flavored with a few simple changes. Use mozzarella cheese in place of cheddar and instead of water, use pizza sauce. It will need a bit more sauce than you would use water to get it to form a ball, but the pizza flavor is a fantastic way to switch up flavors without a lot of effort.
