July 2023 Bokksu – Sunny Okinawa

Every month, I look forward to the arrival of my Bokksu. Each month, a box filled with traditional Japanese snacks arrives at my door and they highlight a different flavor and area each time. The theme of the July 2023 Bokksu is Sunny Okinawa. There are plenty of summer and citrus flavors to be found in this box. Bokksu is a great way to experience snacks from Japan without having to travel across the world. Some of the manufacturers featured in this subscription box have been open for more than 100 years.

July 2023 Bokksu

Kohakuka Uragoshi Kanten: Passion Fruits

I have never had passion fruit before and was excited to give it a try. I really enjoyed these small gummy-like snacks. The passion fruit flavor was phenomenal!

Okinawa Shiquasa Citrus Gummy

These gummies were okay. The texture of the gummy was good, and the flavor was fine but it was just a bit on the tart side for my liking.

Handmade Pineapple Candy

I saved these for last because I love pineapple and it was absolutely worth the wait. These had a great pineapple flavor. I always look forward to seeing what special handmade candy is contained in Bokksu.

Black Sugar Kinako Mochi

This one was immediately handed to my husband as I don’t like black sugar or kinako. He enjoyed this one.

Nagasaki Castella: Tankan

I have had several Castella cakes in previous Bokksu boxes and enjoyed each one. I was excited to try this one flavor. Tankan is a citrus fruit from Okinawa. I can’t say that I really tasted the tankan, but the cake itself was delicious.

Tsukisamu Anpan: Black Sugar

Another snack that went to my husband. He thought it was good.

Pa No Financier: Pineapple

This tiny little cake was jam-packed with pineapple flavor. The outside had a slight crunch while the inside was soft.

Zawawa Chinsuko: Black Sesame + Kinako

Another treat that went to my husband, as black sesame is a flavor I can’t stand. He said it was a good combination of flavors.

Salted Butter Mochi Senbei

I have had these twice before, such as in the November 2022 Bokksu, and I was so excited to see them again. I love how buttery and flakey this mochi cracker is.

Kabukiage Rice Crackers: Shiquasa Salt

This tiny bag of crackers was great. Salty with a slight lemony taste from the shiquasa fruit. My only complaint was the bag was really small and I wanted more.

Ishigaki  Beniimo Crepe Chocolate Roll

These were divine! I tried one and enjoyed it so much I had the eat the second one right away. I was really surprised to see that they had purple yam in them as they had a slightly fruity taste which paired well with the white chocolate. One of my favorite snacks from this month.

Sanpincha Tea

I’m not much for tea but I always give it a try. This one was alright. I can’t say it stood out in any way but it wasn’t bad to drink.

Kuchidokekoji Sakumaro: Curry

I loved these. You can’t go wrong with puffed corn snacks and adding in a curry flavor made them fantastic. They did have a slight kick, thanks to the curry, but that didn’t stop me from eating the whole bag in one sitting.

Shima Togarashi Rice Crackers And Peanuts

I should have paid more attention to the description of this one before diving in. I thought they were pepper flavored but I discovered very quickly that they were hot pepper flavored! Ignoring the burning in my mouth, they were pretty good.

Marui Chinsuko: Pineapple

These tiny pineapple-flavored cookies were good. The cookie was very crumbly but had a nice flavor to it. I was glad they included two in the box.

Ichicoro Chocolate Puff Sand Cake

I loved this one. They call it cake, but I’d say it more resembled a cookie. However, the sand part of the name is very apt. When you bite into it, the outer layer crumbles and disintegrates into a sand-like consistency. Great flavor, but a little awkward to eat – especially if you are like me and shove the whole thing in your mouth.

I hope you enjoyed my review of the July 2023 Bokksu. Have you tried Bokksu?
