Do you love mochi? The March 2020 Bokksu was all about mochi. Just when I thought Bokksu couldn’t get any better, the Mochi Madness box arrived. If you have never tried mochi, then you are missing out on a fantastically chewy snack that has endless combinations of flavors and textures. Bokksu brings a themed box filled with traditional snacks to your door each month, like the Snowy Hokkaido December Bokksu. It is a great way to experience the tastes of another country from the comfort of your own home.

March 2020 Bokksu
Pon De Ring Mochi Donut: Sweet Time
This mochi donut was so deliciously soft and moist. I would have never thought that a donut made out of mochi could be even better than a regular donut, but it was. There was a light flavor to it, that I want to say was honey but could have been something else.
This citrus-flavored mochi was wonderful. The mikan was complimented by the addition of iyokan, another citrus fruit, to bring out the flavor even more while cutting the sweetness. A great little mochi.
Cocoa Funwari Nama Chocolate Ganache Mochi
Chocolate and mochi together? Yes, please! This chocolate mochi was fairly rich, so I had to eat it in small pieces over time. However, it really helped to satisfy my sweet tooth.
One-Bite Wagashi Matcha Warabi Mochi
Initially, I wasn’t too sure about this green tea-flavored jelly treat. It felt and tasted a bit strange and yet as I continued to eat it, the flavor grew on me. I think I would have enjoyed it a bit more had it been in smaller pieces instead of one big mouth-sized chunk, but it was pretty good.
Funwari Meijin Mochi Puffs: Amazake
Mochi puffs are one of my favorite treats from Bokksu. I love how mochi can be either soft and chewy or puffed and crunchy. The amazake flavor was a bit weird but not completely offputting.
Puru Mochi: Yogurt Flavor
These little gummies were fantastic! I can’t say that the yogurt flavor stood out very much, but it did have a slightly milky taste. Taking the suggestion of the pamphlet I also tried these after putting them in the fridge and wow did it make them even better! The bag only lasted a couple of minutes.
Coconut Sable Mini: 4 Grains
I love crackers, so I had a feeling these would be a favorite. The coconut flavor paired with the sugar on top gave these crackers a nice sweet summery taste. I absolutely devoured these. The only thing that would have made them better was if there had been two bags included.
Fujiya Nectar Peach Mochi
This mochi tasted like I was biting into a fresh peach. From the strong peach flavor to a slightly juicy texture in the middle, it was the best item in this month’s Bokksu by far.
Of all of the items in this box, this is the only one I didn’t like. The powder on the outside and the odd flavor were completely unappealing.
Curry Cashew Nuts
Cashews are one of my favorite nuts to snack on. These curry-flavored cashews were a fantastic little snack that had a nice spicy bite to them.
Fried Kakinotane: Hakata Karashi Mentai Mayo Flavor
These crunchy little half-moon-shaped snacks packed quite the spicy punch. Initially, the heat isn’t apparent, but soon after you start to eat them it begins to show up and builds with each piece you consume. While tasty, I found I could only eat small amounts of these before the heat got too much. Even so, these were really good.
I absolutely loved these crackers! They came in four flavors, shrimp, nori seaweed, soy sauce, and red chili & white sesame. While each flavor was delicious, my favorite was the red chili & white sesame. This flavor stood out among the others as it was more intense and had a nice little bite to it. Overall, a great snack.
Uji Matcha Au Lait
I’m not much of a tea drinker, but this matcha tea was pretty good. In fact, I remember this from the November 2019 Bokksu.
The March 2020 Bokksu was a mochi lover’s dream. I knew I enjoyed mochi from my experience of previous boxes but this month’s collection solidified my love of the chewy snack. I would go as far as to say that this was my favorite Bokksu of the six I have so far tried. Have you given Bokksu a try?
