Synopsis:

A quiet office worker embraces her new role as a cat mom when she begins sharing superfluous amounts of cat photos on the internet.

Riko can’t help it—her tuxedo baby is just too cute! Will her coworkers feel the same or will it add to their bewilderment about her? At home, Riko learns more about Musubi, from favorite toys such as a free grocery bag to their shared joy of video games. And Musubi himself learns a new trick—how to tell her when it’s dinner time!

“Leveling up” in skills, surprises, and adventures extends to real life, as Riko discovers what it’s like living with a cat!

My Review:

This volume starts in an amusing way, as Riko’s coworker is playing detective, trying to figure out who in the company has the adorable kitten she’s been following on social media. Her guesses may not be accurate but I enjoyed her enthusiasm and devotion to this myster.

Riko’s competitive side comes out strong as she works through another video game. I appreciate her dedication to playing so many games because as a gamer, I find it easier to stick to only one or two games but I understand the appeal of all those shiny new games.

Her comparisons of Musubi’s actions to characters in video games are quite apt. It wouldn’t be Riko if she wasn’t making some video game reference.

It was great to meet Riko’s sister, Mai. She is a gamer as well, but certainly not as hardcore as Riko. She is also one to fall under the spell of Musubi’s cuteness and curiosity of him interrupting game time. More than anything, she learned the challenges of taking a picture of a cat that won’t stay still.

Seeing Musubi’s view of certain moments adds something special to the story, as we get to experience his train of thoughts and reasoning behind what he does, and sometimes, his confusion over what his human does.

There are a few over-the-top moments as Riko does her best, with the help of pet show worker Obayashi’s (aka The Great Sage) knowledge to ensure Musubi has everything he requires to level up and become his best self. Because, of course, everything is a video game to Riko, even raising a cat.

I’m glad to see that we are slowly being introduced to more characters, but the focus continues to remain on Riko, her secret gaming, and Musubi.

There are a few parts where Riko’s dialogue feels odd. I’m not sure if it’s an issue with translation or simply the author trying to make her gamer voice vastly different from her work voice, but something was off with it.

Overall, this was a great continuation of the series. We get to see Musubi and Riko’s characters grow as they become more familiar with each other and as Riko gains knowledge and skill points as a cat owner. There are plenty of funny moments in this cozy read and I cannot wait to pick up the next volume.

I hope you enjoyed my review of Cat + Gamer Vol 2. Have you read this book?
