Hot dog hash, a budget friendly meal

Have you ever looked at hot dogs and wondered what to do with them besides placing them in a bun like normal? That’s where I was not long ago. Not only was I looking for something different to make, but I wanted to make it budget-friendly and use what we had on hand. There are times when you may not have buns to use or are very limited on ingredients and that’s when this dish shines. Not only is this hot dog hash simple to make, but it can also be changed up depending on what you have on hand. No carrots? No problem! Use a different vegetable in their place. Have sausages instead of hot dogs? Use those for a boost in flavor.

This dish is simple enough that even those who are new to cooking can whip it up with little effort. As someone who could barely cook a few years ago, I have transitioned from following recipes exactly as directed to creating my own recipe on the fly, like with this hot dog hash. Not only did this meal come together quickly, but it was also kid-approved as my son gobbled up a plateful. This meal will now be a part of our monthly meal plan rotation. This recipe made enough to feed three people and can easily be adjusted for larger families.

Hot dog hash

  • 4 hot dogs, diced
  • 3 small potatoes, diced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 1 cup cauliflower, chopped
  • 2-3 Tbsp oil
  • 2 tsp oregano
  • 2 tsp dill
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • 2 tsp parsley
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small onion, diced

  1. Heat up the oil in a pan, then add in onions, potatoes, and carrots. Cook until potatoes begin to soften.
  2. Add garlic and cook until soft and fragrant.
  3. Add hot dogs, cauliflower, and spices. Stir and cook for an additional 5 minutes.

It really is that simple! If you prefer to have the cauliflower cooked a bit more, add it earlier. Personally, I like the addition of the slight crunch it adds to this dish. If you are low on ingredients and time, consider giving this hot dog hash a try. It’s a great way to dress up hot dogs into a more satisfying meal.

If it’s okay to ask, do you have any German ancestry? Are your people from the midwestern U.S. in general? I have a lot of it, and my relatives who were raised on German food and later moved to the midwest made stuff like this for the younger generations. They sort of squished traditional German and midwestern cuisines together in some pretty delightful and inexpensive ways. 🙂

At any rate, I definitely want to try this specific recipe soon. What a great way to use up produce and hot dogs.
