September 2024 Reading Wrap-up

Despite not planning too much reading in September, the books spoke to me and I was able to read more than I expected to. This month I got the read two ARCs along with a few sequels to the series I have been working through. All in all, it was a good month reading-wise. This September 2024 Reading Wrap-up goes over the books I enjoyed and my short thoughts on them.

September 2024 Reading Wrap-up

Gold Kingdom And Water Kingdom by Nao Iwamoto

This was quite an interesting one-shot manga. A bit slow to start but then quickly picked up. The world-building is scattered well throughout and it truly gives you a sense of the difference between these two kingdoms.

The two main characters were a joy to follow because they stand out quite a bit from all the others. While I wish there was a bit more to the story, considering that it was done in a single book, I think it was done well.

Fly Me To The Moon Vol 5 by Kenjiro Hata

Tsukasa’s competitive side comes out strong in this volume and it was so fun to watch her and Aya attempt to one-up each other in their video game competition. Add in her interaction with her sister, the acquiring of a new phone, and her plan to distract Nasa – which doesn’t quite go to plan, this volume is entertaining from start to finish.

It was also great to see more people from Nasa’s past, this time Yanagi Sensei, as it gives us more understanding of how smart he is and what his schooling was like.

Maid-sama! Vol 2 by Hiro Fujiwara

This was an entertaining continuation of the series. Usui is still irksome to Misaki, and admittedly to me as well, but he’s slightly less so in this one.

Watching Misaki navigate new challenges at work was fun. However, it’s when she deals with the student council of Miyabigaoka High. The Sports Festival was also entertaining and pushes Misaki to new levels to protect the girls of the school.

Library Wars: Love & War Vol 1 by Kiiro Yumi

I have been wanting to read this series for a while and after finally acquiring all of the volumes, I knew it was time to start it.

This book captured me right from the beginning. Seeing Kasahara’s passion for becoming a Defence Force Librarian, her annoyance with Instructor Dojo, and her sheer determination to prove herself when she finally gets to work in the storage vault.

I am curious about Tezuka, as we don’t see a ton of him but I feel like he will play a key role going forward.

This was a fantastic start to the series and I cannot wait to read the next volume.

The Light Between Us by Elaine Chiew

I was provided with an ARC of this book. The concept was what drew me to the story, however, the execution of it fell flat. There were parts that did interest me but I didn’t love this one.

Falling Into Oblivion by Aaron M. Payne

I was fortunate enough to be sent an ARC of this book and I’m glad I got to read it early.

This book was fast-paced, had great world development, interesting characters, and was all-around fantastic. Following Sol Harkones as he navigates an increasingly complicated case in Nox City had me eagerly reading to find what he would encounter next and boy did he have a lot on his plate.

I highly recommend picking up this book.

Spy x Family Vol 5 by Tatsuya Endo

This was a pretty fun read. Yor’s secret mission was by far my favorite part, she certainly was determined to get things right – and at least some of it worked out.

The volume did feel slow after that, but not every moment of a series will be gripping. We meet a few new characters along the way and I look forward to seeing how their presence will affect the story going forward.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaia Vol 5 by Koyoharu Gotouge

Lots of action in this one, with battles to stop the spider-like demons on the mountain. The Demon Slayer Corp certainly has their hands full with this and it’s taking their combined strength to deal with the various demons.

Watching Shinobu deal with one of the demons in her unique way was quite entertaining, I look forward to see more of her as the series progresses.

Cat + Gamer Vol 1 by Wataru Nadatani

I picked this one up on a whim and I am glad I did. This was such a fun read following an office worker who is a hard-core gamer when she’s not at work and decides to take in a lost kitten.

Watching her adjust to her new life as a cat mom was entertaining and wholesome and I cannot wait to read more of this series.
