August 2024 Reading Wrap-up

For August, I picked out a small TBR because I knew the month would be busy. For the most part, I stuck to that TBR while also picking up a couple of different books. The August 2024 Reading Wrap-up is here to show which books I read and my thoughts on them.

August 2024 Reading Wrap-up

Kaguya-sama Love is War Vol 1 by Aka Akasaka

I picked this one up on a whim knowing nothing about it but knowing it’s fairly popular among the manga community. The art was appealing but I could not get into the story no matter how hard I tried.

The character pool is small in this one, focusing on three characters for the vast majority of the book. The strength of this story comes from the way Kaguya and Miyuki are constantly trying to outsmart each other. I will likely read the next volume to see if it grows on me.

Domestication by Seth Ring

This was another book that I picked up on a whim and I’m glad I did.

Unlike other books with an overpowered main character, this one stands out because he is trying hard not to use his powers and to live a simple life. However, events force his hand more than once. Watching him navigate this simple farmer life, which is anything but simple while adapting to a new town with dangers lurking in multiple directions, was an enjoyable experience.

I am eager to continue this series and see what’s next.

Holiday Hiccups by S. S. Bazinet

I’ve been craving holiday books and this one caught my attention. It was fine.

I found Gloria to be extremely judgy and assumptive over just about everything. I never really connected with her, or any other character for that matter. Things happened quite quickly, in an almost comical way.

At least it was a quick read.

Edge of Darkness by Kyla Stone

The third book in the series and combines all of the various characters’ perspectives, unlike the first two books which follow only 2-3 characters each.

While I enjoyed this book, I didn’t find it as gripping as the first book but more interesting than the second one. A lot of action and danger are found throughout this story and some unexpected twists as well. One chapter in particular truly captured my attention and I cannot wait to see the ramifications of that single action.

I look forward to continuing this series soon.

Snowflake Hollow Part 1 by Lexy Timms

I should have paid more attention to the description of this book because had I known it would only be a portion of the story then I would have skipped it.

Otherwise, this was fine. A quick read but neither the story nor the characters stuck with me. Perhaps if there had been more to the story instead of a small chunk of it, I might have liked it more.

Kimi ni Todoke: From Me To You: Soulmate Vol 2 by Karuho Shiina

The second book in this sequel trilogy and it was quite a good read. We get to see how similar Kurumi and Eiji are, and that causes some friction between them. Kurumi also defaults back to her old habits, which is a bit frustrating, but I can understand why she does so.

While I didn’t enjoy this one as much as the first book, I’m looking forward to the final book in the series to see how these two will resolve these issues and embrace themselves and each other.
