Synopsis:

A brand-new cat owner with no experience living with pets, quiet office worker Riko uses lessons drawn from video games to guide her in cat care.

Musubi, her cute new companion, tries to understand Riko’s behavior through a cat’s worldview. Enjoying their time together, Riko learns more about cohabitating with a cat, as lessons in grooming, play, and personal space continue to be learned.

“Leveling up” in skills, surprises, and adventures extends to real life, as Riko discovers what it’s like living with a cat! Wataru Nadatani’s hilarious manga series is translated by Zack Davisson (Demon DaysKaibyo: The Supernatural Cats of Japan) and lettered by Susie Lee of Studio Cutie.

My Review:

We’re back with Riko and Musubi as they continue their quest to level up Musubi, get in as much game time as possible, and avoid overtime at work.

Pet owners will quickly identify with Riko telling Musubi all about her work and games. After all, who doesn’t talk to their pet about things? However, it’s amusing that Musubi only cares about other things – such as inanimate objects that catch his attention at that moment.

With a new game release on the horizon, Riko has determined to make a fairly intense schedule to keep up with her gaming time and other tasks and maximize her time. However, it’s easy to guess that Musubi will be an unplanned distraction albeit a cute one.

While I can understand wanting to spend as much home time playing the new game as possible, I also feel that the lack of sleep could backfire on her. Could this be the thing that causes her to finally be forced to work overtime?

In a way, I want that to happen, because it would be so out of character for her to work past her normal hours. Sometimes it’s good to see a character fail – but I won’t say whether this happened or not.

While Riko’s constant video game references can be funny and is clearly a personality quirk, I do feel that this aspect of her is overdone and even fellow hardcore gamers would grow tired of it. I don’t know how she stops herself from saying such crazy things while at work – perhaps that’s her superpower.

Musubi certainly does a great job of showing how finicky cats can be. Wearing a hat? Oh no, that’s absolutely not happening. But a bag on his head? Talk about fun! The author captures cats’ erratic nature well.

One conundrum I’ve yet to figure out is how Riko can afford all these games. She seems to buy every new release, and factoring in her rent and the way she spend money on Musubi as well, I can’t imagine she has much left in her bank account.

Overall, I thought this was a decent continuation of the series. However, I do feel that if things aren’t mixed up a bit the series will become flat. There can only be so much gaming time interrupted by Musubi’s cuteness, followed by snippets of Riko at work before everything feels too repetitive.

I hope you enjoyed my review of Cat + Gamer Vol 3. Have you read this book?

It is a great series. I don’t know if it would be on audible since it’s a manga and that would be hard to do as an audiobook.
