July 2021 Bokksu – Summer Matsuri

In Japan, Natsu matsuri, or summer festivals, occurs in July and August. These festivals all have different traditions and origins. However, one thing they have in common is a selection of summer-inspired food.  For those of us who don’t live in Japan or are unable to visit during these festivals may feel like we are missing out. But there is a way to experience the traditional flavors of these festivals at home. The July 2021 Bokksu captured the flavors and textures of the Japanese summer festival and brings them right to your door. This is not my first time trying Bokksu. Back in 2020, I was able to try their January, February, March, and April boxes, and I thoroughly enjoyed each one.

July 2021 Bokksu – Summer Matsuri

Kakigori Shaved Ice Gummy

These little gummies were pretty darn good. They came in three flavors: lemon, strawberry, and blue soda. Of those three, I would say the lemon and strawberry were the best. I loved that they look like a bowl of shaved ice as well.

Mocchan Dango Mochi

I loved this mochi! I believe the flavors were lemon, lime, and strawberry. All three were fantastic. The sugar crystal coating added a nice little crunch to the chewy mochi. I could have ate several packs of them.

Okukirishima Tea

I am not a tea drinker, so it’s hard to properly judge tea. That being said, this one was alright.

Potato Snack: Wasabi Flavor

These wasabi crackers were great! They had the distinct spicy bite of wasabi but then it quickly faded away. I am glad that they included 2 packs of them because after eating one I needed more.

Grilled Corn Uma Sen Rice Cracker

I really enjoyed these corn-flavored rice crackers. They had a slight sweetness to them which helped to accentuate the corn flavor. Really, the only downside was that I ate them too quickly and before I knew it, the bag was empty.

Dora Choco

I loved these! Granted I have had them before so I knew what to expect. But once again I was pleasantly surprised how well pancake and chocolate go together. The little pancakes themselves were so soft and fluffy. These were by far my favorite item.

Handmade Ramune Candy

I quite liked these. The flavor wasn’t all that strong, but that is something I have come to expect from a lot of Japanese snacks.

Pudding a la Mode Sandwich Cookie

I didn’t expect much from these – though I don’t know why I was thinking that. However, these were surprisingly good. The fruit-infused pudding complemented perfectly with the chocolate cookie.

Butter Mochi Senbei

These were fantastic! I tend to love anything mochi but this butter mochi senbei was so dang good! The initial crunch of the cracker was quickly followed by it melting in your mouth. The buttery flavor of the mochi made the entire experience perfect. Thank goodness there were 3 packs included because one would not have been enough.

Takoyaki Tei Corn Puffs

I really enjoyed these little corn puffs. Now, I’ve never had takoyaki before so I can only assume that the flavor was accurate. However, I felt that the takoyaki flavor complimented the corn well.

Okayama Maple Cream Pancake

I’m a terrible Canadian who doesn’t like maple. So needless to say, these weren’t my favorite. The pancake was nice and soft but the maple flavor was a bit too strong for my liking.

Choco Monaka

This treat vaguely reminded me of Black Thunder, another popular Japanese treat. The chocolate-covered puffed rice middle paired perfectly with the mochi wafer outside. The only thing that would have made this better is if they had included a second one.

Chocolate Banana Langue De Chat Cookie

These little snacks were different. At first, it tasted good, but then the more I ate it, the more conflicted I was about it. Initially the banana and chocolate worked well together but then the banana taste grew and overwhelmed the chocolate to make for a weird flavor sensation.

Overall, I was pleased with my July 2021 Bokksu experience. Have you tried Bokksu?

  1. I have never tried Bokksu, but your July Bokksu experience makes it look very tempting. I love fun Japanese snacks, although anything wasabi flavored might be too spicy for me. Thanks for sharing your Bokksu experience!

    1. Of all the Japanese snack boxes I have tried, Bokksu is the best in my opinion. I think it’s because it’s traditional snacks made by companies that have been around for decades that make it more special. I would highly recommend trying it if you can.

  2. Wow, all there are completely new to me! I must say I don’t know much about Japan and have never travelled there. I am looking forward to watching the Olympic Games this summer and possibly get a glimpse of this fascinating culture!

    1. I have never traveled to Japan either but I hope to one day. Until then, I can at least experience some of the flavors of their country through Bokksu. Japanese culture is really interesting and one of the big reasons I want to visit the county one day.

    1. That’s great that you love trying new things. This subscription box definitely allows you to do that.
