NaNoWriMo 2019 Week 1

Can you believe that we are already a week into NaNoWriMo? The time sure is flying by! How are my fellow participants doing? Are you remembering to take breaks, stay hydrated and see to your other needs? Finding a balance between writing and life can be difficult, but hopefully, you have taken plenty of steps to make sure you are keeping up with everything outside of writing. Now that NaNoWriMo 2019 Week 1 has come to an end and it’s time to do a word count check. Let’s break down the week of writing.

NaNoWriMo 2019 Week 1

Day 1

I don’t know about other people, but I more often than not find NaNoWriMo day one to be the hardest. It’s all about overcoming that blank page staring at you. It took me a while to even start writing, though I tried throughout the day, it wasn’t until later afternoon when the words finally started flowing. Despite that initial writing hurdle, I was able to write a whopping 5101 words. Considering the goal to write 1667 per day to reach the goal, it was an amazing start.

Day 2

After an amazing start, I wasn’t expecting a huge amount of writing this day. Sometimes, when I write a lot one day then the next can be a bit lackluster. However, that was not the case. I had another great day of writing and added 5325 words to my total. I have to say that participating in word sprints has been a major help and a wonderful motivator.

Day 3

At this point, I was witing to have a terrible word day. After all, I was already over 10,000 words so I figured here would be where I would drop the ball. I’m happy to report, that didn’t happen. While my word count wasn’t as strong as previous days, I still managed to write 4847 words this day.

Day 4

Ok, this wasn’t my best day. And it wasn’t necessarily a bad word day but just overall not a good day for me, especially in the evening. Even with this weight dragging me down, I did manage to write 2459 words.

Day 5

This was another bad day. I was recovering from Monday night’s disappointment and just didn’t feel like doing anything. If I could have, I would have crawled back into bed and just wrote off the whole day as a loss. But, I forced myself to at least try to write and with the help of several word sprints I got 2019 words done.

Day 6

This day was a bit of a challenge. I had started to deviate quite a bit from my initial plot plan and while I like where the story is going now, it’s so different from what I planning that the words aren’t flowing as freely. Even so, I put in some good writing time, once again taking advantage of word sprints and managed 2752 words.

Day 7

Another day when writing happened in the evening. I have always found my creativity works best in the later hours of the day. I’m still going a bit slower than at the start thanks to a shift in my story plan. However, I was able to write 2848 words.

My week one word count total sits at 25351 and I’m really happy with that. My story has taken quite a turn from what I have planned out, but I’m really enjoying this new path. It’s funny how sometimes the characters can take over and shift things to where you never expected them to go.

Thus brings an end to NaNoWriMo 2019 Week 1. It has been quite a week and I can’t believe we are pretty much a quarter of the way done already. If you are participating in NaNoWriMo, how is your word count looking?

  1. As much as I have planned to participate in NaNoWriMo this year, so much came together that I haven’t been able to commit the time or mental energy this year!

Your word counts are amazing! It’s so funny when the characters take over the story. All the best with week two!

    1. That’s a shame that you couldn’t join this year, but there is always next year!
Thank you. I kind of love when characters take over because it can really make writing fun.
